The LNER B17 or "Footballer" class were built in 1928 by Sir Nigel Gresley and were designed to haul heavy express passenger services up the Great Eastern mainline routes and to replace the former B12's on this service. The B17 class ran up until the 1960s when the last one was withdrawn in January 1960, a total of 73 locomotives were built in this class.
