These little locos were first used to transport munitions and equipment through the open countryside to the troops during the first World War. The trackwork was designed to be simply laid over the open fields, sometimes by just two men, often without ballast or drainage – hence the German name “Feldbahn” = field railway.
After the war, the locos and rolling stock was scattered across Europe to be utilised by many factories, docksides and similar industrial uses – transporting wood and agricultural crops as well as coal and mineral ores.
Nowadays of course, many of these railways have been brought back to life for the delight of tourists and rail fans.
