Series E257 made the debut in 2000 to replace the predecessors Series E183 and E189. It is currently operated as limited express “Azusa/Kaiji” on JR Chuo mainline between the metropolitan area and mountainous Nagano. It is featured with the mark made of diamonds and patterns of various colors, pink, green, yellow, purple, silver which respectively symbolize spring flowers, lash trees in summer, autumn foliage, winter mountains, and snowy ridges on the backdrop of the white body that represents snowcapped Japan Alps and white apple blossoms.
This train design was awarded the blue ribbon prize in 2002 by the railway fan club. The headlight and taillights on the scale model will be changed into bulb colour LED.
