Piko HO 2016 New Items

Matt Lovell

MATT LOVELL looks at new releases from Piko in HO Scale.

PIKO is one of the key continental brands that we stock here at Gaugemaster, and spans four different scales; N, TT, HO and G. For this article I will be concentrating on the new items to be released in the HO Scale range and highlighting a few locomotives and rolling stock from each section. The HO Scale range of PIKO is split into three separate sections: Hobby, Classic and Expert.

The Hobby range are entry level models which feature basic details but still keep the excellent running characteristics of the PIKO range.

Piko Class BR101 Locomotive

The first model in the Hobby series which I thought was quite attractive is the PK59456 Class BR101. This class of locomotive was built in 1996 and 1999 and can still be seen on the rails today. The DBAG normally use the large flat side of the BR101 as advertisement by creating new and exciting liveries. The one I have chosen to focus on has been decorated in Swisstravel Graubunden Livery. A stunning loco at a great price. This locomotive is available in both 2 Rail DC and 3 Rail AC versions.

Piko Hercules Locomotive

The second locomotive which I have chosen to focus on is the PK57989 Hercules Diesel Locomotive. This eye catching design is different on both sides of the locomotive and looks absolutely stunning. These locomotives were introduced in 2002 by Siemens and are a common sight on most German routes. This model is available in both 2 Rail DC and 3 Rail AC versions.

Piko Starter Set

PIKO also produce starter sets In the Hobby range which come complete with a detailed locomotive, rolling stock, PIKO track and a controller with UK power supply. This year they are producing a set which includes the V220 locomotive, PK57132 Express Passenger Set. This set also comes with a re-railer so that the locomotive and coaches can be placed on the track with ease.

Piko Rolling Stock

The last items I have focused on are some of the commercial wagons that are set to be produced. These particular wagons have been decorated in lots of different eye catching designs and will really stand out on any model railway. Even Captain Birdseye makes an appearance in his continental guise!

PK58722 OBB Pfanner Long Wheelbase Van V

PK58721 DBAG Iglo Long Wheelbase Van V

PK58723 RZD Long Wheelbase Van VI

Now letís look at the Classic Series.

The Classic range is the high end of the PIKO world. These models feature high quality details on the bodies and include lots of interior details.

Piko Blue Flash DMU

The first model in the Classic range that caught my eye was the PK52069 BBO Rh5045 Blue Flash 2 Car DMU III. I like this locomotive because of the sleek design but also the unusual shape of the driving cab. This model is available as both DC and AC variants.

Piko Weathered Gondolas

The second item that I looked at was the three pack of covered gondolas, PK58351 DR Tm5605 Lidded Box Wagon Set Weathered (3) IV. These wagons not only feature lots of detail on the handrails and other parts of the wagon but for the first time they are available as weathered models. Detailed in a light dusting of white these models could be used in any industrial setting or as part of a dirty rake being hauled across your railway.

Piko Cement Silo

Lastly in the Classic range I focused on the brand new Cement Silo wagons, PK54690 DR Cement Silo Wagon IV. This style of wagon has not been made by PIKO before and with two different liveries they are sure to be a great hit with modern modellers.

Piko Cement Silo Detail

They feature lots of detailed handrails, wheels and under chassis decoration.

Now letís look at the Expert Series.

The Expert range of locomotives and rolling stock feature sophisticated details including separately applied parts and detailed interiors. The locomotives are also quite heavy which gives them great traction and reliability.

Piko Class 102 Locomotive

The first locomotive to look at is from the Expert range is the BR102 Class Locomotive. This model (PK52630 DR BR102.1 Diesel Locomotive IV ) is a brand new design for PIKO and features directional lighting, traction tyres, detailed rear hand rail and a PLUX22 decoder socket. This model is available in both DC and AC variants.

Piko V200 Class Locomotive

The next model to look at in the Expert range is the PK52600 DB V200.1 Diesel Locomotive III. This model is a new design of the V200 and features a streamlined hood, PLUX22 decoder socket, traction tyres and red/white directional lighting. This model can also be fitted with a Digital Sound module (PK56359) which adds a whole new dimension to the locomotive. As with others mentioned, this model is available in both 2 Rail DC and 3 Rail AC versions.

Piko Class 193 Locomotive

The brand new liveries for the PIKO Class 193 Vectron. The two new liveries are Regiojet and Captrain. This class of locomotive were launched in 2010 at the Innotrans Trade Fair by Siemens. The sleek design and stunning liveries make this locomotive a must have for any modern era model railway.

These models can be fitted with a digital PLUX22 interface and sound decoder and are available in both 2 Rail DC and 3 Rail AC versions.

Piko Class 102 Locomotive

The last items I will focus on in the Expert series are the highly detailed silver coaches. These coaches feature a detailed interior, "Peacock" design on the body and are designed to scale length. This series of coaches includes 1st, 2nd class coaches and a control coach fitted with directional lighting.

PK57667 DB BD4nf 2nd Class Coach III

PK57668 DB B4nb 2nd Class Coach III

PK57669 DB AB4nb 1st/2nd Class Coach III
