Marklin New Items 2018

John Chandler

JOHN CHANDLER takes us through the new releases from Marklin this year.

Following from last year's celebration of 60 years of the Trans Europ Express, Marklin are marking the 90th anniversary of the classic train, Rheingold, which was integrated into the TEE family.

In concert, they are also celebrating 25 years of their Insider Club and the 60 years of development of the Prussian T18, a prestige German tank locomotive. Supportive products to the release of Warner Brothers' film, Jim Button and Luke the Engine Driver are also announced.

Unless specifically stated, all references are to H0 Scale. Marklin also provide models in Z Scale and Gauge 1.

As a one-time series, a train set comprising the iconic Glaskasten (MN26609) (DB class 98.3, formerly Bavarian PtL 2/2) is offered complete with two coaches (with interior lighting) and a boxcar with optional tail lights.

Variations of the TEE Rheingold abound; the Rheingold Rheingold Offshoot (MN26983) set comprises a BR112 electric locomotive with four close-coupled coaches. In Z Scale, the ubiquitous E03 (MN88544) is offered along with the classic coach set (MN87269). Meanwhile, the 1928 Rheingold (MN26928) set (production limited to 2999 sets) captures the original 'feel' of this train in H0 whilst in Z Scale (MN81332), the set is produced as a one-time series.

In the myWorld range, an 'Airport Express Elevated Railroad' (MN29307) starter set is proposed. Piers for the elevated section comprise bricks compatible with a well-known Danish manufacturer of building blocks! Additionally, an airport facility (MN72216) and elevated track extension set (MN23302) are also announced. New train sets include the TGV (MN29306), an Italian (MN29334) with a Swiss Lyria (MN29335) set and to add further interest, a diamond crossing (MN23303) is added to the track range. A level crossing (MN72215) with working lights and manually operated barriers is also proposed.

Adding to the C-Track range, a fully automatic level crossing (MN74924) is proposed. Working from the in-built sensor tracks, the barriers and lights operate on the approach of a train. Targeted at the younger modellers, a building-block car (MN44737) is proposed. This four-axle wagon also utilises bricks compatible with said well-known Danish manufacturer of building blocks and features four lighting modes: permanent, blinking, varying intensity or responsive to sound! A USB charging cable is included. Replacement axles (MN700580) for two rail operation are also available.

From the Royal Bavarian State Railroad (K.Bay.Sts.B), a class S 2/6 steam locomotive (MN37018) and set of four coaches (MN41354) is proposed.

For local shunting, Marklin offer the classic V60 Diesel locomotive (MN37861) complete with a variety of mfx+ functions, including Telex couplers at front and rear.

Marklin New Items 2018

Forerunner to the UK Class 42, Warship, Marklin re-introduce the V200 of Deutsche Bundesbahn in its 1958 incarnation. In H0 (MN37806), the model's features include cab and engine room lighting controlled with its mfx+ decoder, whilst in Z (MN88203) it has directional headlights.

Marklin New Items 2018

Hot on the heels of last year's Goliath crane, which had sold out before being officially released, Marklin now propose an Ardelt 57 tonne Steam Crane (MN49570). Using new tooling and constructed mostly of metal, this crane features a smoke generator, boom elevation and rotation, hook movement, various lighting effects and several surrounding sound effects.

On 3rd April 2007, a 'slightly modified' TGV from the SNCF fleet shattered the speed record for rail-based (I exclude Maglev!) traction, attaining 574.8kh/h (359.25mph). Nearly 11 years after this achievement, Marklin offer a replica (MN37797) of the record-breaking consist together with a certificate of authenticity as only 3000 models will be produced. The mfx+ decoder offers many sounds including cheering as the record was achieved!

In June 2016, the Gotthard Base Tunnel was opened and went into full passenger service in December of that year. Since then, SBB have been operating panoramic coaches over the original scenic route. Whilst they have been using these coaches for several years, they have recently been re-branded for their current use and, in respect of this, Marklin propose a set comprising three of the new-look panoramic coaches both in H0 (MN43650) and Z (MN81594) scales.

Recognising that some countries do still tend to use rail for longer distance postal services, two sets of SBB postal wagons (MN48059) (MN48062) are now proposed. Also, NS class mP3000 (MN26613) from 1977 is offered as a set including its box car.

Marklin New Items 2018

In preparation for later festivities, Marklin propose their Easter (MN80418) car. This Z scale car is decorated appropriately and presented in a transparent Easter Bunny seated in a green basket!

Marklin New Items 2018

In the world of maintenance, a Z Scale Catenary Maintenance set (MN82101) is proposed. The wagon loads are made of wood.

Marklin New Items 2018

On the signalling front, Marklin are offering seven new signals, Hp0/Hp1 Home with narrow mast (MN70393), Hp0/Hp1/Hp2 Home with narrow mast (MN70413), Hp0/Hp1 Home with lattice mast (MN70394), Hp0/Hp1/Hp2 Home with lattice mast (MN70414), Sh0/Sh1 Yard Signal (MN70422), Vr0/Vr1 Distant Signal (MN70362) and Vr0/Vr1/Vr2 Distant Signal (M70382).

Marklin New Items 2018

Taking a wider outlook on the Railway world, Marklin propose several lesser modelled companies. From the Czech State comes a class 380 Skoda (MN36203) electric locomotive. Also, the Swedish class Ue (MN36351) shunter with its Telex couplers. Two Belgian coaches, DVT + 2nd (MN43573), are offered to expand the corresponding starter set (MN29474).

Marklin New Items 2018

In Gauge 1, the Royal Prussian Railroad Administration (K.P.E.V.)'s class T18 (MN55071) steam locomotive as it looked around 1917 is presented. Suitable for AC, DC, DCC and Marklin control systems. Also in Gauge 1 is the ubiquitous E03 (MN55105) complete with Telex couplings and raiseable pantographs.

Marklin New Items 2018

This year also celebrates the 50th anniversary of Marklin's sister company, LGB. Being primarily a modeller of metregauge, LGB's major range comprises the Swiss Rhaetische Bahn (RhB) and to celebrate this anniversary, the RhB (and the SBB) have decorated Ge4/4 and Re4/4 (respectively) locomotives with suitable vinyls. This has, of course, been modelled (MN37351) by all of the Marklin component companies and others.
