Fleischmann 2017 New Items

Ian Fowler

IAN FOWLER takes us through what's available from Fleischmann in 2017.

Following on from the overview of the new items announced by Roco in 2017, we now take a look at the offerings from their sister brand, Fleischmann in this, their 130th year. With so much history behind the brand, it is no surprise that tradition and passion are the watchwords of this iconic name in the world of Model Railways.

Again, the range is segmented with "Start" primarily targeted at newcomers with the rest of the products being part of the standard range.

Given the large number of new items, we are focussing more on completely new models but there are also a huge number of reliveries so do please take a look at both brochures in depth either online here for the Start range, or here for the HO and N Scale range - or as hard copy as RC81791 (Start)/FM991721 (HO and N Scale).

Fleischmann cater for both HO and N Scales so we'll kick things off with HO Scale new items.

Start (HO Scale)

The Start brochure (RC81791) covers both brands and has no rear cover, simply two front ones with Roco at one end and Fleischmann the other meeting at the centre staples.

Fleischmann Start Starter Set

FM631781 Start - DB BR212 Diesel Freight Starter Set

As beginners are the target, two starter sets are offered a German Diesel Freight Set from Era IV featuring a BR212 and three wagons controlled by a MultiMaus (FM631781) and an Austrian Era III Steam Freight Set with two wagons, again with MultiMaus control (FM631582)

Fleischmann Start Locomotive

FM414201 Start - DR BR24 Steam Locomotive

New locomotives (and these are repositioned and reliveried existing tool items) are limited to a DR BR24 in Era III black and red as FM414201.

Fleischmann Start Crane

FM501901 Start - DB Crane & Match Wagon

Rolling stock sees the sensible addition of a competitively priced crane wagon set in DB yellow (FM501901) and the introduction of a DB era IV 2 axle tank wagon in grey as FM503306 and a 2 axle hopper in DB brown (era IV) as FM551002. An era IV container wagon in the primarily grey with red stripe DB scheme appears as FM524002 while the theme is brought more up to date as FM523402 a DB Cargo container from era V. A large capacity DB Railship van is a surprise but very welcome addition to the range as FM537601 while sliding wall wagons are represented as DBAG (FM537201) and DB InterCargoExpress as FM537602.

Fleischmann (HO Scale)

Fleischmann Swiss Starter Set

FM481702 Swiss Rack & Pinion Railway Analogue Starter Set

To celebrate 130 years of the company, there is a special anniversary starter set containing a Swiss rack and pinion train, featuring conventional analogue control. This collectible set has the reference number FM481702.

Fleischmann DB Locomotive

DB E52 Electric Locomotive

A completely new item is the DB E52 Electric Locomotive. Complex tooling will ensure that this distinctive looking locomotive is depicted accurately with the locomotive being available in three versions standard (FM435201), DCC Sound fitted (FM435271) and AC Sound fitted (FM395271).

Fleischmann DB Shunting Locomotive

DB BR160 Electric Locomotive

A further completely new item is the DB BR160 Electric Locomotive. Given the duties assigned to this locomotive, it is pleasing to see that shunting is well catered for, as it is being released in four versions standard (FM436003), DCC Sound & Digital Fleischmann couplers (FM436073), DCC Sound & Digital Hoop couplers (FM436076) and AC Sound with Digital Hoop couplers (FM396073).

Fleischmann BR141 Locomotive

FM432805 DBAG BR141 Electric Locomotive

The popular BR141 is available in Orient Red for the first time as item numbers FM432805, FM432875 & FM392875.

Fleischmann ICE Train

FM445001 DBAG BR401 ICE1 Power Car Set

To commemorate 25 years since an ICE train travelled from Hamburg to Frankfurt and then on to Basle and Zurich, the ICE1 is revisited and given the accurately modelled dual pantographs, this will be interesting to both German and Swiss modellers.

Fleischmann Oberammergau coach set

FM566484 DB Murnau-Oberammergau Coach Set (3)

There's a really nice Murnau to Oberammergau coach set (FM566484) enhanced by a DCC function decoder for accurate lighting.

Fleischmann DBAG Rolling Stock

FM552316 DBAG Falns183 Side Discharge Hopper Weathered Set (3)

The humble Type X flat wagon re-appears but with a newly tooled brake system and close coupler, in DRG era II colours (FM591402) while in almost total contrast, we see authentically weathered items appear as two Falns183 DBAG sets (FM552316 & FM552317).

Start (N Scale)

Fleischmann N Scale Starter Set

FM931702 Start - DBAG BR120 Electric Freight Starter Set

There are four new starter sets starting with a German Express Passenger Set comprising of a BR221 diesel with 3 coaches powered by a z21/MultiMaus digital combo (FM931781). The German theme continues with a DBAG InterCargoExpress set with a BR120.1 electric as the locomotive, and the set conventionally analogue powered (FM931702). Switzerland is represented by two freight sets, one being analogue controlled and featuring a Em4/4 diesel hauling 3 ballast hoppers (FM931701) and the other comprising a BR203 in the very attractive Cargo livery with 3 x Postal Containers. This MultiMaus digital set is referred to as FM931485.

There are a variety of "new" locomotives in the range which although targeted at newcomers offer excellent value to modellers of all tastes. Discount them at your peril!

Fleischmann BR120 Locomotive

FM735303 Start - DBAG BR120 502-0 Electric Locomotive

We start with a personal favourite of mine the BR120 in DB Systemtechnik yellow which is unusual in having two legitimate running numbers although thankfully Fleischmann have only allocated it one reference number which is FM735303!

Fleischmann Spanish Locomotive

FM722701 Start - RENFE Serie 10700 Diesel Locomotive

There's a BR111 in DBAG red (FM734603) for modern day modellers and the ever popular DB218 is represented in DB orient red as FM724001, DBAG yellow as FM723606 and DBAG AutoZug SyltShuttle as FM723611. Spanish modellers are not forgotten with the appearance of the 10700 Diesel Locomotive from era III (FM722701).

Fleischmann Italian Rolling Stock

FM820511 Start - FS Type E Gondola

Rolling stock was already well catered for but there are three new additions. A German Type E Gondola in DB era IV brown (FM820513), an Italian equivalent in FM820511 and a DBAG side discharge hopper wagon (FM852323) completing the offering.

Fleischmann (N Scale)

Fleischmann Swiss Locomotive

FM738902 Swiss Rail Traffic Re487 Traxx3 Electric Locomotive

The big announcement is the introduction of the BR187 Traxx3 locomotive to the range. Initially offered in DBAG red as FM738901 and the same livery but DCC Sound fitted as FM738971, alongside a Swiss Rail Traffic version as FM738902/FM738972, these locomotives will look fantastic on a modern layout.

Fleischmann Swiss Locomotive

FM737211 SBB Ae6/6 Canton Electric Locomotive

Many other models are revisited and refreshed with DCC fitted versions of the DR BR37 (FM714382) and DB BR169 (FM737186) being made available while the legendary Gotthard Ae6/6 electric locomotive is both cosmetically and internally revised to accurately depict the Canton variant (FM737211/FM737291) and the Stadtelok version (FM737212/FM737292).

Fleischmann IC Locomotive

FM738806 DBAG IC BR146.5 Electric Locomotive

A notable re-livery is the BR146.5 in IC colours, always a popular selection (FM738806/FM738876) and the complexity of the printing featured on OBB Tauruses (or is that Taurri?) Rh1216 019-0 Achenseeschiffahrt (FM731218/FM731297) and Rh1116 158 Licht ins Dunkel (FM781702/FM781772) is to be admired.

Rolling stock is mainly new colour schemes for existing items but the IC/EC driving coach in DB IC livery, complete with DCC function decoder, is a very welcome addition.

Fleischmann Wine Tank Wagon

FM845702 KBayStsB Wine Tank Wagon with Brakemans Cab

But there is a completely new tooled item - an intricately detailed Wine Tank Wagon available as an era I version as FM845702, an era II version as FM845701 and a Swiss variant (FM845703).

Fleischmann Bogie Tank

FM848014 SBB Mitrag Chrome Plated Bogie Tank Wagon

Some interesting re-visitations include the DB Ommi51 dump wagons which now appear with close couplings as FM845103, the boiler wagon is released in era III green for the first time (FM838202) and there's a chrome plated bogie tank which is a real eye-catcher as FM848014. There's a new shaped corrugated container sitting on item numbers FM825207/FM825208 which features more detail, including the roof.

Finally, a wide variety of signals are introduced which have been produced in association with Viessmann.

To conclude, a pragmatic selection of new items, which seems both realistic in terms of delivery and viability. Production runs are shorter than ever before so I would urge anyone with a firm interest in any of these items, to place pre-orders with their local dealer to ensure you don't miss out.

Here's to the next 130 years of Fleischmann. Prost!
