RANGE SPOTLIGHT - Roco HOe Narrow Gauge

Martin Lovell

MARTIN LOVELL looks at the Narrow Gauge offerings from Roco.

Roco HOe

Roco produce a fine range of products for the modeller in HOe, or OO9 format.

They cover the "main line" type of stock, as used on the OBB in Austria, as well as the narrow gauge lines of the DR, down to the Feldbahn, or field railways, as used in industry all over the world.

Steam, diesel and electric prototypes are in the range, with an appropriate range of coaches and wagons to suit.

The locomotives are all very well detailed, and very reliable runners, even at typical slow speeds, and only require a minimal amount of maintainance (cleaning and lubrication) to get the best results from them.

All stock is supplied in a pristine finish, but with a bit of weathering can be made to look far more like the hard working industrial engines of the narrow gauge scene.

Roco also produce a range of typical narrow gauge track, with prototypical sleepers, in both "set track" or flexible track, plus pointwork either manual or with point motors attached.

The point motors are almost silent in operation, even using a capacitor discharge unit, and pass the smallest wheelbase locos with no apparent ill-effect.

The HOe system can be combined with an HO or OO layout quite happily, as an industrial set up, or a branch line in its own right.

Also, of course, the stock can be used on other manufactures tracks, and the couplings are a standard "Loop and hook" type, found on other HOe types.

Due to the nature of narrow gauge, the industrial stock does not look too out of place on a British layout, due to the import of captured stock after the First World War, which was widely used by British contractors due to the low cost of army surplus supplies at the cease of hostilities, indeed, 2 foot gauge, or 600mm, almost became the standard narrow gauge in industry after 1918.

Below are photographs of my own layout - as featured in previous Right Lines articles - showing how well Roco products fit in to a narrow gauge layout. Click each image for a bigger version.
