Painting Noch Unpainted Figures Figures

Stuart Jordan

STUART JORDAN explains how to paint these new figures from Noch.

This year Noch have brought out several packs of unpainted figures, in OO/HO, TT and N Scales. These allow the modeller to customise the figures on their layout, changing the colours and fashions of the clothes on the figures to match the period or country being modelled. Either Enamel or Acrylic paints can be used, it is usually down to personal preference.

Following on from my article about Painting HO/OO Scale Preiser Figures, I have decided this time to go for N Scale.

Painting Noch Figures

The figures come in multiples of twelve, cast onto connected sprues in groups of three. I am going to paint the three figures in the top right of the sprue.

Painting Noch Figures

Using a pair of sprue cutters I have snipped off the relevent part of the sprue. I won't be removing the figures until they have been fully painted, as the sprue provides a handy hand-hold while painting.

Painting Noch Figures

The sprue has been sprayed with Humbrol Matt Black Spray as an undercoat. You can see I have already started to fill in the flesh colours.

The clothing colours are filled in, leaving a thin line of the black undercoat around each block of colour to give the figure depth.

TOP TIP:The smaller the figures, the more muted the colours should be. If you see a group of people from a long way away the colour of their clothes will be less distinct. If you add a small amount of Dark Grey paint to the colour that you are using, this will help to achieve this effect.

Painting Noch Figures

The finished figures are given a coat of Humbrol Matt Varnish, and they are ready to be removed from the sprues and added to the layout. You will need to touch up the areas where the sprue attaches to the figure.
